Five inmates have tragically lost their lives during a riot at a high-security facility in Venezuela, as confirmed by government officials.
Officials from the Ministry of Penitentiary Services reported that the violent incident occurred at Yare prison, located approximately 70 kilometers from Caracas. What began as a brawl among inmates escalated into a significant disturbance.
Authorities indicated that the turmoil was confined within the maximum-security institution, but further details on the fatalities or any additional injuries have yet to be disclosed.
The Ministry noted that the Public Prosecutor’s Office has commenced an investigation into the occurrences of that day. However, specifics regarding the number of injured individuals have not been provided at this time.
Yare prison has been previously scrutinized for overcrowding and security flaws, which have previously led to tumult.
Officials will continue their inquiries to ascertain the precise causes of the riot and the events leading to the fatalities.
