WhatsApp has expanded its footprint on Apple devices with a native Apple Watch companion app, compatible with Series 4 and newer models. Users can now view notifications, read complete messages, and record plus send voice notes directly from the watch, without needing their iPhone at hand.
This release follows WhatsApp’s earlier move to offer a dedicated iPad app, which replaced the web-only tablet experience and aimed to provide a more consistent cross-device workflow.
Key Features of the Apple Watch App
The watch app introduces several capabilities users have requested for some time:
Full message view: Long messages are displayed in full so users can read conversations end-to-end.
Voice messages: Record and transmit voice notes directly from the watch interface.
Emoji reactions: Respond to messages with emoji reactions, mirroring the iPhone experience.
Improved media display: Stickers and images now render clearly on the watch screen.
Chat history access: Scroll through previous messages and conversations from the wrist.
As with WhatsApp’s other platforms, end-to-end encryption protects the privacy of messages and calls within the watch app.
What’s Missing
Despite its broad feature set, the watch app still lacks certain functions: users cannot initiate voice or video calls, start new chats, or view status updates. By contrast, some competing apps offer different, though often limited, watch capabilities such as basic notifications or media previews.
A Step Toward Seamless Messaging
The new Apple Watch app reflects a push toward wearable-first design, making notifications and quick replies more accessible and reducing the need to reach for a phone for routine messaging tasks.
