This week, Calgary was hit by a harsh winter storm characterized by strong winds and heavy snow, creating perilous driving conditions. Motorists encountered drastically reduced visibility, icy surfaces, and significant traffic disruptions, prompting urgent safety alerts from both police and driving specialists.
Authorities noted that while snowfall itself was not excessive, fierce winds—reaching nearly 80 km/h—intensified the hazardous scenario. In certain locations, visibility plummeted to just a few feet, challenging drivers' ability to see not only other vehicles but also lane markings and potential dangers. Consequently, city streets and highways quickly became hazardous.
A major concern highlighted by officials was the tendency for drivers to activate hazard lights in poor visibility situations. Although intended to enhance visibility, experts warn that such usage can actually lead to confusion. Hazard lights serve to indicate a vehicle that is stopped or in distress, not for routine driving in adverse weather conditions.
When numerous vehicles operate with flashing hazard lights, it complicates the ability of other drivers to evaluate speed, distance, and vehicle movement. Furthermore, since hazard lights override turn signals, this limits effective communication for lane changes or turns, increasing the risk of accidents during these already tense conditions.
Law enforcement and driving coaches are advocating for safer practices. Recommendations include reducing speed, extending following distances, utilizing appropriate headlights and taillights instead of just daytime running lights, and ensuring vehicles are properly maintained for winter travel. Emphasis was particularly placed on using winter tires to significantly enhance traction on snowy and icy roads.
Experts also highlighted that the safest strategy during severe weather is often to avoid travel when possible. If conditions rapidly deteriorate, drivers should find a safe spot to pull over and wait for the storm to subside, as winter conditions can shift unexpectedly.
With traffic fatalities already a pressing issue this year, officials remind residents of Calgary that winter driving requires patience, preparedness, and vigilance. Reducing speed, ensuring optimal visibility with proper lights, and limiting unnecessary trips can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents and enhance road safety during unpredictable winter storms.
