Nurturing Young Racing Talent at Yas Marina Circuit

Nurturing Young Racing Talent at Yas Marina Circuit

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Yas Marina Circuit solidifies its status as a premier destination for motorsport and community involvement, hosting over 180 varied events each year. These range from foundational karting to prestigious events, including the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

As noted by Mohammed Al Hashemi, Director of Motorsport Programmes and Community Engagement, the “Al Sabq” initiative has successfully pinpointed promising young Emirati racers. Managed by Yas Heat Academy, this programme is dedicated to cultivating motorsport skill from an early age.

This year’s second installment of the programme took place at Yas Kartzone in partnership with Mercedes-Benz, with participation seeing a twofold increase; 26 children aged five to seven joined in. Notably, young female racers like Ameera Al Mheiri made significant contributions.

The circuit remains vibrant year-round, featuring events such as the Yas Speed Festival and Yas Super Street Challenge. It also encourages community fitness via weekly activities such as TrainYAS and women-specific cycling and running sessions, which attract substantial numbers. Advanced smart safety systems are in place to ensure rapid response to any disturbances.

Yas Marina Circuit provides a well-defined progression for drivers, starting from karting and leading up to single-seater racing. This framework has already benefitted talents like Rashid Al Dhaheri, who is now affiliated with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Junior Team.

With these efforts, the circuit aims to foster a fresh wave of Emirati drivers ready to compete at the pinnacle of global motorsport in the coming 15 years.
