Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, the Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, has announced a significant milestone as the Zayed National Museum is set to open in December 2025, coinciding with the UAE's 54th National Day celebrations. He emphasized that this museum will serve as a quintessential symbol in the Saadiyat Cultural District, embodying the nation's story. The museum aims to present the UAE’s unique identity, rich history, and future aspirations with clarity and foresight, while paying homage to the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
Al Mubarak highlighted that Abu Dhabi’s cultural initiatives have been guided by a dual philosophy: that culture fosters connections between societies, and that a nation thrives when it preserves its heritage while looking towards the future. The Zayed National Museum encapsulates both these convictions. It will join other prominent institutions on Saadiyat Island, forming a cluster of cultural hubs that underscore the UAE's dedication to creativity and knowledge. What sets this museum apart is its deep-rooted connection to the UAE’s narrative and the core values of its populace.
Visitors will encounter both personal and universal stories within the museum, spanning from ancient history—which stretches back 300,000 years—to the contemporary accomplishments of the UAE. Highlights of the museum’s collection include the Abu Dhabi Pearl, one of the earliest natural pearls discovered, and the reconstruction of the Magan boat, which symbolizes age-old cultural exchanges. These artifacts will be enhanced by multimedia installations and rare archives, making the UAE's past resonate with future audiences.
The museum will illuminate the life and leadership principles of Sheikh Zayed, emphasizing his love for unity, education, and environmental stewardship, along with his global outlook. It is envisioned not only as a custodian of history but also as a facilitator for learning, discussion, and international collaboration. Expect exhibitions that bridge the UAE with global audiences, addressing themes like archaeology, sustainability, and arts through the lens of national heritage.
He praised the architectural design of the museum, crafted by Foster + Partners, featuring five towers reminiscent of a falcon's wings. This structure incorporates sustainable cooling technologies that echo traditional Emirati innovations, reflecting Sheikh Zayed's commitment to environmental conservation.
