President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has expressed his support for the core “principles” of a newly revised plan from the United States aimed at bringing an end to the ongoing conflict with Russia. During his daily address on Tuesday, Zelensky remarked that the updated proposal may pave the way for “deeper agreements” going forward.
This plan revision follows significant backlash towards its predecessor, which appeared overly accommodating to Moscow. While details of the updated plan remain under wraps, Ukrainian officials have already assessed its key points. Zelensky underscored that these new principles could lay the groundwork for serious negotiations, expressing hope for “active cooperation” from Washington and direct involvement by US President Donald Trump.
Zelensky highlighted the crucial role of the United States, stating that “much depends on America” as Russia closely observes US strength and decisions. Notably, discussions between US and Russian officials took place in Abu Dhabi on the same day, indicating ongoing diplomatic engagement.
Earlier, Zelensky informed Ukraine's international allies of the country's readiness to advance using the “framework” established collaboratively with the US during Geneva talks. He noted that while the framework is primed for in-depth negotiations, there are still a few “sensitive points” requiring further dialogue. He also expressed his willingness to meet with President Trump to tackle these issues.
The Ukrainian leader called for European nations to take an active role in this process, insisting that any significant security decisions impacting Europe must involve its leaders. He emphasized that a collaborative stance among the US, Europe, and Ukraine is indispensable for achieving a secure and lasting resolution.
The revised plan is set to steer the forthcoming discussions aimed at terminating the conflict, though a timeline for its full release remains uncertain.
