Zelensky Strengthens Ukraine's Defence During Paris Visit

Zelensky Strengthens Ukraine's Defence During Paris Visit

Post by : Rameen Ariff

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky traveled to Paris to bolster Ukraine’s defense amid intensified missile and drone attacks from Russia. This visit is part of his engagement with Western allies, following a recent energy agreement with Greece on Sunday and preceding his trip to Spain on Tuesday.

During his discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace, Macron reaffirmed France’s dedication to supporting Ukraine. He mentioned that French defense expertise would be “utilized to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities.” Plans to facilitate Ukraine's acquisition of advanced military systems focused on air defense were key highlights of their conversations.

The visit commenced at Villacoublay air base, where both leaders inspected France’s Rafale fighter jets and the SAMP-T surface-to-air missile system, a joint development with Italy. The SAMP-T can engage fighter jets, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles, with a new, enhanced version anticipated by 2027.

France has also committed to providing additional Aster missiles for use with both the SAMP-T system and aircraft. In a video released earlier, Zelensky indicated an “historic agreement” in the making, with a crucial defense deal expected soon. Conversations also revolved around the production of drones, as Ukraine aims to deploy over 4.5 million drones this year for both offensive and defensive measures.

Zelensky and Macron also examined the Mont Valerien headquarters of a multinational force that France and Britain are organizing. This force may be deployed in Ukraine should a ceasefire be established, with backing already from 34 countries, including Ukraine.

This marks Zelensky’s ninth trip to France since the start of Russia’s invasion in 2022, coinciding with a corruption scandal in Ukraine's energy sector. Benjamin Haddad, France’s Europe Minister, emphasized the importance of continued vigilance as Ukraine aspires for EU membership.

Amid escalating tensions on both the battlefield and diplomatic spheres, Zelensky’s Paris visit underscores the urgency of securing advanced weaponry and bolstering European support to enhance Ukraine’s defenses against ongoing Russian hostilities.
