In a stellar performance, Zimbabwe's Ben Curran achieved his inaugural Test century, extending his team's lead to 198 runs against Afghanistan on the second day of their one-off Test at Harare Sports Club. This impressive innings solidified Zimbabwe's strong response to Afghanistan's initial total.
Afghanistan struggled in their first innings, collapsing for just 127 runs. Zimbabwe answered back with a formidable 359 runs, where Curran's significant contribution of 121 runs was pivotal in providing stability throughout the innings.
The 29-year-old cricketer, brother of England players Sam and Tom Curran, formed a vital 99-run partnership for the fifth wicket alongside Sikandar Raza, who scored 65 runs before his dismissal, thus enhancing Zimbabwe's substantial lead over their opponents.
Beginning the innings at 130-2 overnight and with Curran on 52, he reached the coveted century off 217 balls, displaying both patience and technical prowess before being dismissed lbw. This innings marks a significant achievement in Curran's cricket journey and is a turning point for Zimbabwe in the match.
In his Test debut, Afghanistan's Ziaur Rahman showcased remarkable skill, taking 7 wickets for 97 runs—an impressive feat that ranks as the second-best bowling figures for an Afghan in Test cricket, following Rashid Khan's 7-66 against Zimbabwe earlier. Despite Zimbabwe’s dominant score, his performance kept Afghanistan within reach.
With Zimbabwe's first innings standing at 359, they acquired a significant 198-run advantage. Afghanistan's second innings began with a score of 34-1 at day's end, reflecting early determination but still trailing significantly. Zimbabwe's solid batting, underscored by Curran's accomplishments, has placed them in a strong position for a potential victory.
Ben Curran, hailing from a cricketing lineage with brothers Sam and Tom representing England and their father Kevin also a former Zimbabwe player, adds yet another accolade to their family legacy. This century not only boosts his confidence but also elevates his stature on the international stage.
With a robust lead and crucial wickets in their favor, Zimbabwe stands poised to aim for victory in the one-off Test against Afghanistan, bolstered by their seasoned bowlers and Curran's remarkable performance.
