Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region, the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club successfully organized the Arilah 60ft Dhow Sailing Race, drawing large crowds and generating a strong sense of excitement among spectators. The event, a highlight of the UAE’s traditional sailing calendar, is known for bringing together top dhow owners, captains, and sailors to compete in a display of maritime skill, teamwork, and heritage preservation.
This year, the prestigious “Al-Tebr 55” dhow, owned by Rashid Mohammed bin Ghadir and captained by Mohammed Suhail Khalfan Al-Muhairi, clinched the first place, impressing both judges and the audience with precise navigation and remarkable seamanship. The victory highlighted the high level of skill required to succeed in such competitive events and celebrated the dedication of sailors who have honed their craft over years.
More than 90 dhows participated in the race, navigating a challenging 25-nautical-mile course that tested both speed and strategy. The participants included experienced captains, elite sailors, and prominent dhow owners, all competing not only for the prize but also to uphold the UAE’s rich maritime traditions. Spectators witnessed thrilling maneuvers, close finishes, and expert sailing techniques that made the event both entertaining and inspiring.
The organizers allocated a total prize pool of AED 4.2 million, which was distributed among the top performers. This substantial reward encourages wider participation and helps ensure that traditional sailing practices are preserved for future generations. Beyond the competition, the race serves as a platform for passing down essential maritime knowledge and skills to younger sailors, fostering cultural pride and maintaining community engagement.
The Arilah Dhow Race is more than just a sporting event; it is a celebration of the UAE’s heritage and the centuries-old maritime traditions that are an integral part of the nation’s identity. By showcasing skill, teamwork, and dedication, the event reinforces the importance of preserving traditional sailing, while also highlighting the cultural and social value of such competitions.
Overall, the 2025 Arilah 60ft Dhow Sailing Race successfully combined sport, culture, and tradition, leaving spectators and participants with a renewed appreciation for the UAE’s maritime history and the talent of its sailors. The event reaffirmed the commitment of the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club and the UAE leadership to keep traditional sailing vibrant and relevant for future generations.
