Amazon Joins Google, Microsoft In A Massive $35 Billion India AI Bet

Amazon Joins Google, Microsoft In A Massive $35 Billion India AI Bet

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Amazon has announced one of its most ambitious commitments to date, revealing a plan to invest more than $35 billion in India by 2030. The company shared the announcement at the annual Amazon Smbhav Summit in New Delhi, outlining a strategy that focuses on digital expansion, export promotion, logistics development and workforce growth.

This new investment builds on nearly $40 billion that Amazon has already invested in India since 2010, a period during which the company has expanded its presence across e-commerce, cloud services, logistics and digital payments.

According to the company, the upcoming investment will support three major priorities — digitisation, export growth and job creation. Amazon said it will continue strengthening its fulfilment centres, data centres and technology infrastructure in India, aiming to equip small businesses, manufacturers and service providers with modern digital tools.

The company said its digitisation efforts will help millions of small businesses streamline operations, manage inventory efficiently and offer better shopping experiences to customers. Amazon highlighted plans to extend these capabilities to 15 million small businesses in India by 2030, allowing sellers across the country to benefit from advanced digital support.

A major part of Amazon’s vision is to increase India’s participation in global e-commerce. The company aims to help raise cumulative exports through its platforms to $80 billion by 2030, a sharp rise from the current estimate of around $20 billion. This effort includes supporting Indian manufacturers and artisans in reaching international customers through Amazon’s Global Selling programme.

Job creation remains a central pillar of the company’s strategy. A recent Keystone Strategy report mentioned at the summit noted that Amazon supported around 2.8 million direct and indirect jobs in India in 2024, including roles in logistics, warehousing, transport, technology, and customer service. With its expanded investment, Amazon expects this number to grow to 3.8 million jobs by 2030.

Education is another important part of the company’s plan. Amazon announced that it will provide AI-related learning opportunities to nearly four million students by partnering with government schools and educational institutions. The initiative will help students explore digital careers and learn skills that support India’s National Education Policy 2020.

The announcement places Amazon alongside other global tech companies making major commitments in India. Earlier this month, Microsoft revealed new plans for expanding digital capacity, while Google recently committed $15 billion toward building a large-scale data centre in Visakhapatnam in partnership with Airtel.

Amazon’s latest commitment underscores India’s growing importance as both a technology hub and a global export engine, as the company continues long-term investments in the country’s digital and economic future.
