Teacher Shot Dead at Aligarh Muslim University Campus, Killers on Loose

Teacher Shot Dead at Aligarh Muslim University Campus, Killers on Loose

Post by : Meena Ariff

A school teacher was brutally shot dead on Wednesday evening within the premises of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Uttar Pradesh, sparking widespread shock and concern over campus security. Danish Rao, a veteran computer science teacher at the ABK High School on the university campus for more than 11 years, lost his life after being attacked near the university’s central library.

According to eyewitnesses and preliminary police reports, Danish Rao was walking with two colleagues around 8:50 pm when they were suddenly intercepted by two unidentified men riding a scooter. The assailants threatened the group with pistols before opening fire on Rao. He was shot at least three times, including two fatal shots to the head. Disturbingly, one of the gunmen reportedly warned Rao before shooting, stating, “You don’t know me yet, now you will,” indicating a possible targeted attack.

The assailants fled immediately after the shooting, escaping on their scooter, leaving the university community in a state of shock and fear.

Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Jadon confirmed the incident and stated that both suspects had fired at Rao. The victim was rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College for urgent medical care but was declared dead upon arrival due to the severity of his injuries.

The shooting occurred in a busy area near the university’s central library, raising serious questions about security measures on campus. In response to the incident, the police have formed six dedicated teams tasked with investigating the case. These teams are currently reviewing CCTV footage from multiple angles to identify the assailants and trace their escape route.

AMU Proctor Mohd Wasim Ali addressed the media, expressing deep sorrow and shock over the murder of the long-serving teacher. He confirmed the details of the attack and emphasized the urgent need for increased vigilance and enhanced security protocols on campus to protect students and staff.

This violent incident came just hours after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed the state Assembly, boasting about significant improvements in the law-and-order situation across the state. He stressed the importance of a secure environment to encourage investment and growth in Uttar Pradesh. However, the killing at AMU raises urgent questions about the safety of educational institutions in the region.

The university administration and local police are under pressure to ensure a thorough investigation and prevent such incidents in the future. Authorities have appealed to anyone with information related to the shooting to come forward.

As the investigation progresses, the AMU community mourns the loss of a dedicated teacher and calls for swift justice. Further updates on the case and the efforts to apprehend the shooters are awaited.
