Apple has once again pushed the boundaries of personal tracking technology with the launch of its next-generation AirTag, an updated version of the wildly popular item finder that sets new standards for range, precision and usability. The second-generation AirTag introduces critical hardware and software enhancements — including a more powerful Ultra Wideband chip, extended Bluetooth range and a louder built-in speaker — all aimed at making lost item recovery easier and more reliable. These improvements build on the original AirTag’s success and reflect Apple’s broader commitment to empowering users in everyday life through seamless, intuitive technology.

When Apple first introduced the AirTag in 2021, it transformed how people kept track of personal belongings like keys, luggage, wallets and more. Leveraging Apple’s expansive Find My network, the AirTag offered a simple yet powerful solution for tracking objects using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Ultra Wideband (UWB) technologies. Its integration with iPhones and other Apple devices made it a favourite accessory among users seeking peace of mind and convenience.

By delivering more accurate positional information through a combination of haptic, visual and audio feedback, the new AirTag makes locating misplaced items less stressful and more reliable. Whether searching for a set of keys behind a couch cushion or a bag misplaced in a crowded space, users now enjoy more confidence and clarity in pinpointing an object’s location.

Bluetooth Range Enhancements

Complementing the Ultra Wideband improvements is a stronger Bluetooth radio that expands the connection range at which items can be detected. This extended range makes the AirTag even more useful in real-world scenarios where distance and obstacles can interfere with traditional tracking. The enhanced Bluetooth support ensures that the AirTag remains a powerful tool for locating objects even when they’re farther away than before.

Improved Audio: Louder Speaker for Better Detection

One of the most immediately noticeable improvements in the new AirTag is its speaker — now 50 percent louder than the original. This enhancement means that when the AirTag is pinged through the Find My app, its sound can be heard from significantly farther away, helping users locate lost items by sound as well as sight.

This louder audio output is particularly useful in noisy environments or when the item is hidden out of direct line of sight. Enhanced chimes and distinct audio cues improve usability for users across age groups and environments, reinforcing the AirTag’s value as a dependable everyday accessory.

Seamless Integration with Apple Ecosystem

Find My App and Network

The new AirTag continues to rely on Apple’s Find My network, a crowdsourced system comprised of hundreds of millions of Apple devices worldwide. When an AirTag is out of Bluetooth range, the Find My network can help locate it by securely relaying location signals through nearby Apple devices — all while protecting user privacy with end-to-end encryption.

This network not only enhances the tracking capability of the AirTag but also differentiates it from many third-party trackers by relying on one of the most extensive device ecosystems in existence. With the improved hardware in the next-generation AirTag, this network becomes even more effective.

Compatibility with Apple Devices

While earlier AirTags primarily required an iPhone for best performance, the new model expands true Precision Finding support to compatible Apple Watch models — specifically the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later running the appropriate watchOS version. This wrist-based tracking option caters to users who prefer quick access to tracking information without needing to pull out their phone.

At the same time, the AirTag remains broadly compatible with devices running iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and later, ensuring wide usability across Apple’s product ecosystem.
