According to a JP Morgan research note cited by MacRumors, Apple is gearing up for a significant enhancement of the front cameras in its next iPhone 18 series. All flagship models—including the iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Air 2, and the anticipated foldable iPhone—are expected to boast a 24-megapixel front camera, a substantial upgrade from the 18-megapixel sensors in the iPhone 17 series.
This advancement represents a noteworthy improvement in Apple's selfie technology, with promises of sharper image quality, enhanced performance in low-light conditions, and superior detail in portrait shots. This comes on the heels of the iPhone 17 series, which introduced an 18-megapixel sensor along with the “Center Stage” feature, providing a wider field-of-view to keep subjects centered during video conferencing.
Furthermore, the foldable iPhone, likely to be named the iPhone 18 Fold, might incorporate Apple's first under-display front camera, enhancing its 24-megapixel capability. This innovation could enable a sleek inner display devoid of any visible cut-outs, marking a design achievement for the tech giant. Expected to adopt a book-style configuration akin to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series, this foldable device is highly anticipated.
While premium models are poised to benefit from these camera upgrades, budget-friendly options like the iPhone 18e and second-gen iPhone 17e are believed to retain a 12-megapixel front camera, aiming to keep expenses down for the average consumer.
Additionally, Apple might be altering its product launch strategy, possibly moving from a yearly cycle to two separate rollout phases starting in 2026. Higher-tier models, such as the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Air 2, and the foldable variant, could release in the latter part of 2026, while standard models might make their debut in spring 2027.
With these anticipated enhancements, Apple is evidently committed to elevating front-camera technology, aligning with burgeoning social media trends and the increasing demand for top-notch selfies and video calls.
