Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese tied the knot with his longtime partner Jodie Haydon on Saturday, making history as the first sitting Australian leader to marry while in office. The ceremony took place in the serene garden of the official residence, The Lodge, in Canberra, attended by close family and friends.
Albanese, 62, looked dapper in a bow-tie while Haydon wore a flowing white dress, as confetti rained down in celebration. Sharing the moment on social media, the prime minister posted a one-word caption, “Married,” along with a video capturing the couple’s joyful walk together. In a joint statement, the newlyweds expressed their happiness and commitment, saying they were “delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together.”
The couple had been engaged since Valentine’s Day 2024, when Albanese spoke of having found a partner “who I want to spend the rest of my life with.” They wrote their own vows and were married by a celebrant. Adding a personal touch, Albanese’s cavoodle, Toto, served as the ring bearer. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed Sydney-brewed beer as the couple walked down the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s classic “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours).”
The newlyweds plan to enjoy a five-day honeymoon in Australia starting Monday. Albanese, who divorced his previous wife in 2019 and has an adult son, Nathan, met Haydon more than five years ago at a Melbourne business dinner.
The Labor Party leader, who recently won a second three-year term in office in a landslide election in May, has long been involved in Australian politics, beginning with student politics at the University of Sydney and joining Labor while still in high school. The wedding marks a joyful personal milestone for the prime minister amid his political career, capturing national attention and public interest in Australia and beyond.
This historic wedding has become a trending topic in Australia, reflecting Albanese’s popularity and human side, and is expected to attract significant media coverage and social engagement across global platforms
