Bahrain Champions Maritime Safety at IMO Assembly

Bahrain Champions Maritime Safety at IMO Assembly

Post by : Maya Rahman

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, the Minister of Transport and Communications in Bahrain, attended the 34th session of the General Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in the UK. This gathering brought together maritime leaders from around the globe to deliberate on global shipping safety, environmental stewardship, and sustainable maritime advancements.

During his address, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla emphasized Bahrain's active participation in the IMO since its accession. He affirmed the Kingdom’s robust support for the organization's objectives, including enhancing maritime safety, safeguarding the environment, and ensuring sustainable global shipping practices. He asserted that international treaties are pivotal for developing a safe and sustainable maritime sector in Bahrain.

The minister elaborated on Bahrain's strict adherence to international obligations, facilitated by an updated legislative and regulatory framework. A significant component is the 2022 Maritime Law, which ensures alignment with all global maritime conventions, thereby providing essential regulations for the safety of lives, property, and navigation in Bahraini waters. This legislation underscores Bahrain's commitment to upholding international standards while fostering a secure maritime environment.

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla also highlighted Bahrain's commitment to marine environmental protection, framing the preservation of oceans and seas as a humanitarian obligation. He noted that Bahrain employs a contemporary legislative framework rooted in the MARPOL Convention, which establishes international norms for preventing marine pollution. The Kingdom is also focused on joining the remaining MARPOL annexes, part of its national strategy aiming for net-zero emissions by 2060, highlighting Bahrain's resolve to balance maritime growth with ecological sustainability.

In his speech, the minister remarked on this year's IMO theme: "Our Ocean, Our Commitment, Our Opportunity,” emphasizing the crucial role oceans have in the global economy, environment, and human existence. He reiterated Bahrain's dedication to achieving both economic progression and environmental stewardship in the maritime domain.

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla also outlined Bahrain's strides in maritime governance, mentioning the Kingdom’s adoption of an advanced regulatory framework that promotes compliance with global standards. These initiatives aim to enhance ship safety, minimize accidents, protect marine biodiversity, and ensure responsible shipping practices, positioning Bahrain as a frontrunner in regional and international maritime issues.

In conclusion, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla reaffirmed Bahrain's commitment to collaborating with the IMO and other maritime entities. He stressed that Bahrain will maintain an active stance in supporting safe, sustainable, and environmentally conscientious maritime operations, combining legal, ethical, and technological strategies to ensure the safety and efficiency of future maritime endeavors.
