An 80-year-old man was stopped at Tenerife South Airport in Spain while attempting to board a flight with his wife’s deceased body seated in a wheelchair. This unusual situation immediately raised alarm among airport security and led to a formal investigation by local authorities.
During the security screening, staff noticed that the woman was completely unresponsive and had an abnormally low body temperature. Following this, officials confirmed that the woman had been dead for several hours prior to the attempt to board the plane.
Airport employees quickly raised the alarm, activating emergency protocols to address the situation. Security personnel, members of the Civil Guard, and forensic experts arrived promptly to conduct a thorough investigation.
The man told authorities that his wife had passed away at the airport and claimed that the airport’s facilities were responsible for her death. As a result, the police detained him and initiated a formal inquiry to determine if any criminal charges should be filed.
This incident has sparked wider concern about the effectiveness and thoroughness of airport screening procedures. It is not the first time such a case has occurred; in late 2025, a British family was reported to have attempted boarding a flight with a deceased relative in a wheelchair, although some details of that case were later disputed by airline officials.
An airport worker shared that a security guard noticed the woman’s cold hand and absence of breathing when taking control of the wheelchair from the man. This immediately prompted supervisors to be alerted, and emergency procedures were swiftly put into motion.
The police continue to investigate whether any criminal liability arises from this case.
This incident follows another recent event where an elderly woman died during a flight, contradicting earlier claims that she had boarded the plane already deceased.
