NASA and the US Department of Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop and deploy a nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030. The agreement marks a major step in the United States’ long-term plans to establish a sustained human presence on the lunar surface.
The decision follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on December 18, 2025, titled “Ensuring American Space Superiority.” The order directs federal agencies to prepare a lunar surface nuclear reactor for launch by the end of the decade, highlighting nuclear energy as a key element of future space exploration.
According to officials, the reactor will be based on a fission surface power system capable of producing a steady and reliable supply of electricity. Unlike solar panels, the system will continue to operate during long lunar nights and extreme temperature conditions, making it suitable for extended missions and permanent infrastructure on the Moon.
The nuclear power system is expected to support habitats, scientific research equipment, communication systems, and other critical operations needed for long-duration lunar stays. It is also seen as a foundation for future deep-space missions, including preparations for human travel to Mars.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the project aligns with national space policy goals of returning to the Moon, building infrastructure to remain there, and making long-term investments for future exploration. He emphasized that nuclear power is essential to achieving these objectives and enabling the next phase of space discovery.
The agreement will allow closer coordination between NASA and the Department of Energy, combining space technology expertise with advanced nuclear energy capabilities. Officials believe this collaboration will accelerate development timelines and ensure the delivery of reliable power systems necessary for future missions.
With this move, the US aims to strengthen its leadership in space exploration while laying the groundwork for a sustained human presence beyond Earth.
