Singapore’s Parliament is set to debate the potential removal of Pritam Singh from his role as Leader of the Opposition this Wednesday, following his conviction for providing false testimony to Parliament. The motion to declare Singh unfit to hold the post was introduced by Indranee Rajah, Leader of the House and member of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), citing Singh’s “dishonourable and unbecoming” conduct.
Singh, 49, made history as Singapore’s first official Leader of the Opposition since the nation’s independence in 1965. He assumed the position after the 2020 general election when the Workers' Party secured five seats, bringing their total in Parliament to ten. In the 2025 general election, the ruling PAP extended its uninterrupted six-decade rule by winning 87 of 97 parliamentary seats, with the Workers' Party claiming the remainder.
The controversy centers on a 2024 court ruling that found Singh guilty on two counts of lying to Parliament, relating to false statements made in 2021 about a fellow party member, Raeesah Khan, who herself admitted to lying to Parliament. Though fined, Singh retained his parliamentary seat and was not barred from contesting in the 2025 election. His subsequent appeal was dismissed in December.
Indranee emphasized the gravity of Singh’s actions, stating that lying under oath is a serious offense and that Singapore must uphold strict standards of integrity in its leaders. She also indicated that the conduct of other Workers' Party leaders, including chair Sylvia Lim and vice-chair Faisal Manap, will be reviewed in light of Singh’s case, with possible repercussions.
The upcoming parliamentary debate will focus on determining an appropriate response to Singh’s conviction and conduct, underscoring Singapore’s commitment to maintaining accountability and honesty in public office.
