Antoine Semenyo is feeling right at home at Manchester City after making an immediate impact by scoring in each of his first two games for the club.
The Ghanaian forward, who recently joined City from Bournemouth in a £65 million deal, opened the scoring in their 2-0 win against Newcastle in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final. His arrival has brought fresh energy and confidence to the team, and his performance has quickly won over fans and teammates alike.
Just days earlier, Semenyo had shown his scoring ability in a 10-1 thrashing of Exeter in the FA Cup. In the Newcastle match, he even had a second goal disallowed after a lengthy VAR review, which was a frustrating moment for the player and the team.
Semenyo shared his thoughts on joining City, saying, “The environment here is amazing. Everyone is confident and focused on winning. Coming into this group has really helped me feel welcome and boosted my confidence.”
He added, “It’s been a busy start, but I’m learning fast and enjoying every second on the pitch. I’m carrying the confidence I built at Bournemouth and just playing with joy.”
Late in the game, Rayan Cherki scored to put the match further out of reach for Newcastle, adding a final touch deep into the added time caused by the VAR review.
Despite the strong performance, City’s players were visibly upset about the disallowed goal and past decisions that didn’t go their way. Manager Pep Guardiola highlighted two penalties his team was denied in their earlier Premier League loss to Newcastle, fueling the frustration.
City captain Bernardo Silva summed it up, saying, “We should have been leading 3-0, but these kinds of decisions happen, especially here. It’s frustrating, but we stay focused and keep fighting.”
With Semenyo hitting the ground running and the team in good spirits, Manchester City looks set to keep pushing forward in the competition.
