Bowen Yang Bids Farewell to SNL Mid-Season with Final Episode This Saturday

Bowen Yang Bids Farewell to SNL Mid-Season with Final Episode This Saturday

Post by : Meena Ariff

Bowen Yang will be leaving Saturday Night Live during the current season, marking the end of his impactful tenure on this beloved sketch comedy institution. His exit signifies a notable moment for the enduring NBC series, where Yang has emerged as a standout performer in recent years.

As reported by Variety, Yang's last appearance as part of the SNL ensemble is scheduled to air this Saturday. The episode will be hosted by pop icon Ariana Grande, who stars alongside Yang in the upcoming film Wicked. Additionally, music legend Cher is set to be the musical guest, promising a memorable send-off for the comedian.

At 35, Yang began his journey with Saturday Night Live in September 2018 as a writer for the show's 44th season. His distinctive humor made an immediate impact behind the scenes, and just a year later, he was elevated to an on-screen cast member for Season 45. Since then, Yang has blossomed into one of SNL's most celebrated faces, known for his memorable characters and timely social commentary.

Earlier this year, Yang hinted at a potential departure from SNL. In an April interview with People magazine, he shared his thoughts on the ever-evolving nature of the show, recognizing that it has a commitment to fresh talent and that long-term cast members eventually must move on. While he did not specify a departure date at the time, his remarks led to speculation about an impending exit.

Throughout his years with Saturday Night Live, Yang has earned significant acclaim, including multiple Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025, showcasing his sustained influence on the program. He was also nominated in 2019 for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, reflecting his dual roles as a performer and writer.

Yang joins the ranks of other cast members who have left SNL mid-season. Actress Cecily Strong bid adieu to the show in December 2022 during Season 48. His resignation comes amidst a broader cast overhaul announced earlier this year.

Several other performers have confirmed they will not be returning as well. Devon Walker announced his exit after three seasons via an Instagram post, while Ego Nwodim, Emil Wakim, Michael Longfellow, and Heidi Gardner have also declared their departures.

Bowen Yang's departure concludes a significant chapter for Saturday Night Live. As fans gear up to witness his final skit this weekend, many are reflecting on his notable contributions to the show and the lasting legacy he leaves behind in shaping a contemporary era of SNL comedy.
