The man suspected of carrying out the deadly shooting at Brown University has been found dead in a storage facility in New Hampshire, according to US law enforcement officials. The Brown University shooting suspect found dead news was confirmed on Thursday evening, nearly a week after the campus attack that shocked the country.
Officials said the suspect is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The FBI and local authorities had been searching for him and had earlier announced a $50,000 reward for information related to the case.
Link to MIT Professor Killing Under Investigation
Investigators believe the same man may also be responsible for the killing of MIT professor Nuno F. G. Loureiro, who was shot dead inside his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, on Monday. Authorities have not yet officially confirmed the link, but both cases were being investigated together.
Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, officials spoke on the condition of anonymity and said more details would be shared after formal confirmation.
What Happened at Brown University
The Brown University shooting took place last Saturday during final exams. Two people were killed and nine others were injured when the gunman opened fire inside an engineering building on campus.
The attack caused panic among students and staff. The suspect managed to escape, leading to days of frustration as authorities searched for him. The Brown University shooting suspect found dead update finally brought the manhunt to an end.
Why the Suspect Was Hard to Track
Brown University officials said the campus has more than 1,200 security cameras, but the shooting happened in an older part of the building where there were very few cameras. Investigators believe the suspect entered and exited through a door facing a nearby residential street, avoiding most surveillance.
This may explain why authorities were unable to release a clear image of the suspect earlier.
FBI and Police Response
The FBI initially stated there was no confirmed connection between the Brown shooting and the MIT professor’s killing. However, investigators later began reviewing evidence linking the two attacks.
Experts say it is not uncommon for suspects in such violent and targeted attacks to either take their own lives or be found dead before arrest. A retired FBI agent noted that when suspects escape initially, investigations can take several days.
About MIT Professor Nuno Loureiro
Professor Nuno Loureiro joined MIT in 2016 and was appointed last year as the head of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, one of the university’s largest research labs. He worked on clean energy and fusion technology and led a team of more than 250 researchers.
Born in Portugal, Loureiro studied in Lisbon and London before moving to the US. Colleagues described him as a respected teacher, mentor, and leader who was deeply committed to science and humanity.
Community Reaction
The deaths at Brown University and MIT have deeply affected students, faculty, and the wider academic community. Vigils were held on campus, and calls for improved campus safety have grown louder.
With the Brown University shooting suspect found dead, authorities say the immediate threat has ended, but investigations will continue to fully understand the motive behind the attacks.
Investigation Continues
Police and federal agencies are still reviewing evidence, digital records, and witness accounts. Officials said a detailed report will be released once the investigation is completed.
For now, the tragic events have left two academic institutions in mourning, raising renewed concerns about campus security and gun violence in the United States.
