Rajinikanth’s eagerly awaited film Thalaivar 173, produced under Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, faces a setback following the withdrawal of its initially appointed director, Sundar C.
The sudden departure of Sundar C has led to speculation among fans and industry insiders regarding the film's future. It has been reported that actor Dhanush might step in as the new director, although no official confirmations have come from the production team or the involved actors. This film is particularly notable as it symbolizes a significant collaboration between two legendary figures in Tamil cinema, with Kamal Haasan producing a Rajinikanth vehicle after many years, generating heightened anticipation.
Sundar C attributed his resignation to “unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances.” In a formal statement, he expressed, “There are points in life where we must embrace unexpected paths, even if they diverge from our aspirations. My connection with these illustrious figures (Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan) has been extensive, and I will always hold them in the highest esteem.”
When queried, Kamal Haasan commented, “Sundar C has articulated his reasons for stepping back through his statement. I have no further comments on that matter.” He went on to emphasize his role as a producer in ensuring the script aligns with Rajinikanth’s vision, stating, “We will continue to search for a satisfying script until my star is pleased with it.”
Kamal Haasan also hinted at the potential inclusion of a younger filmmaker, suggesting that audiences should “expect the unexpected” from the team's creative direction.
Thalaivar 173 stands out not only as a reunion of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan after 46 years but also as a rare convergence of two cinematic icons on a major project. The film was officially unveiled during the NEXA SIIMA Awards 2025, stirring considerable excitement among fans. Sundar C’s previous collaborations with both stars add historical significance, having directed Rajinikanth in Arunachalam (1997) and Kamal Haasan in Anbe Sivam (2003). His exit heightens the industry's curiosity regarding the new director for this eagerly awaited film.
As discussions with Dhanush advance, fans are keenly anticipating an official announcement regarding the directorial position, hoping for swift progress towards a finalized script and production timeline.
