The Miss Universe 2025 event has plunged into a new controversy as Miss Haiti, Melissa Sapini, accused pageant staff of placing blame on Miss Jamaica, Gabrielle Henry, for her alarming fall during the preliminary evening gown segment. This incident, occurring on November 19, has left Miss Jamaica with serious injuries, and she remains hospitalized a week later.
Miss Jamaica was showcasing her orange gown with poise when she unexpectedly slipped and tumbled off the stage, leaving audiences worldwide in shock as she was carried away on a stretcher. What began as a tragic incident has spiraled into a fervent discussion regarding the pageant's response.
In a post-accident meeting, Miss Haiti relayed that a staff member suggested that Miss Jamaica's fall was due to her “not paying attention.” Melissa expressed her disappointment at such insensitive remarks, stating it was disheartening to hear blame directed toward an injured participant. Although the staff later emphasized safety as a priority, many contestants were left unsettled by the initial accusation.
Melissa also shared the emotional strain of the situation, recounting a quiet moment with her roommate as they absorbed media reports on the mounting criticisms surrounding the pageant. She described feeling exhausted and heartbroken, as if their aspirations were being overshadowed by ongoing drama and discontent.
As for Miss Jamaica, she is currently recuperating in a Thai hospital. Raul Rocha, the pageant's owner, has personally visited her and provided updates stating her health is improving, with her discharge anticipated soon. The Miss Universe Jamaica Organisation has also reported she is in good condition.
This incident is merely one of many shadows looming over the 2025 Miss Universe pageant. Earlier, an altercation involving Miss Mexico, Fatima Bosch, and Thai pageant executive Nawat Itsaragrisil caught public attention. Allegations of biased judging and disputes among organizers, along with recent resignations from judges, have further tainted the event that should embody talent, confidence, and a sense of global unity.
As scrutiny mounts on the Miss Universe organization, contestants and supporters alike call for enhanced transparency, better safety measures, and dignified treatment for all participants. For now, the fall of Miss Jamaica serves as a poignant reminder that competitions should prioritize compassion and humanity above all else.
