DeepMind has inaugurated a state-of-the-art research lab in Singapore, taking a significant stride towards establishing the Asia Pacific as a key player in artificial intelligence creation. The lab has begun its recruitment process, dedicating its efforts to developing technologies that cater to the region's unique languages, cultures, and practical requirements.
This development follows an extensive expansion of DeepMind's footprint in Asia, with the company more than doubling its workforce regionally in the past year. Singapore's tech-forward environment, bolstered by initiatives such as the National AI Strategy 2.0 and Smart Nation 2.0, has been instrumental in attracting the research powerhouse.
In contrast to the teams formed through the merger of DeepMind and Google Brain in India and Japan, the Singapore lab stands out as the inaugural facility developed from the ground up. Researchers at this lab will focus on enhancing the Gemini model while promoting inclusivity in AI technology for the Asia Pacific audience. Collaborations with AI Singapore on SEA-LION, a series of language models designed to celebrate the region’s linguistic and cultural diversity, are also underway.
The new lab is projected to assist Google Cloud clients in key sectors like education, healthcare, and scientific research. Initial projects on weather prediction, multilingual capabilities, and applied AI solutions aim to benefit both regional customers and the global community.
DeepMind's increasing influence builds on previous collaborations in Singapore involving autonomous systems testing in partnership with government agencies and its support of neuroscience research through AlphaFold. Additionally, the company is broadening training opportunities via free access programs for students and accelerator initiatives for AI startups.
Although specific details regarding the scale of its investment and hiring objectives have not been disclosed, DeepMind has stated that recruitment will involve new hires, internal transfers from Google, and returning Singaporean researchers eager to contribute to the nation's growing AI landscape.
