The Tamil drama 'Kaantha', featuring Dulquer Salmaan, Bhagyashri Borse, and Rana Daggubati, debuted recently and is garnering acclaim from critics. Its box office performance has been strong, amassing ₹19.95 crore thus far. Set in the vibrant era of 1950s Madras, the narrative revolves around T. K. Mahadevan (played by Dulquer Salmaan), as he embarks on making Tamil cinema’s inaugural horror film, 'Saantha'.
In an engaging conversation with Sudhir Srinivasan, director Selvamani Selvaraj and actress Bhagyashri Borse discussed some pivotal moments of the film. Bhagyashri recounted her initial reluctance to execute a scene where she slaps Dulquer, stating:
"Honestly, I was quite apprehensive about that moment, but Dulquer aimed for perfection. We pushed through, and he was determined to capture that essence, which I admire. Still, I felt quite hesitant. It’s the very first time I’ve done something like that."
The director, Selvamani, remarked on Dulquer's commitment, noting how the actor's face reddened following the scene, demonstrating his professionalism.
The crux of 'Kaantha' revolves around the rivalry between T. K. Mahadevan and his previous mentor, Ayya (Samuthirakani), delving into how this conflict affects their families. Bhagyashri portrays Kumari, an ambitious actress, while Rana Daggubati plays Inspector Phoenix, enriching the narrative.
Directed by Selvamani, 'Kaantha' is produced by Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati under Wayfarer Films and Spirit Media. The film has received accolades for its cinematography, authentic period aesthetics, and honest representation of 1950s Madras, creating a nostalgic experience for viewers.
Overall, 'Kaantha' shines not only for its performances and direction but also for its exploration of Tamil Nadu's early horror filmmaking while showcasing the dedication of its talented cast. The captivating chemistry between Dulquer Salmaan and Bhagyashri Borse, complemented by Rana Daggubati’s commanding presence, enhances the film's appeal.
