Tech mogul Elon Musk, founder of Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, has made a striking prediction: within a couple of decades, work may no longer be necessary for humans. During an appearance on Nikhil Kamath’s “People by WTF” podcast, Musk argued that developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics could lead to a society where work becomes a personal choice rather than a requirement.
“It might not take long. In less than 20 years, work could be seen as optional, more of a leisure activity,” Musk observed. He elaborated that innovations in AI and robotics could satisfy all human desires for goods and services, allowing work to transform into a hobby rather than a duty.
Musk envisions a world where AI systems and robots manage nearly all tasks presently undertaken by humans. “It will be about having whatever you can imagine,” he noted. He suggested that one day, AI will meet all human requirements, rendering it unnecessary to perform tasks just for human benefit. At this stage, he believes AI could operate autonomously, free from the limitations of human input.
The tech billionaire also mentioned that such advancements might diminish the importance of money. “If AI and robotics become capable of fulfilling all human needs, the significance of money would be greatly reduced,” Musk stated. He even predicted that energy production could take center stage as the new currency, indicating a shift from monetary to resource-based economies.
Musk has previously shared similar visions, asserting that AI and humanoid robots could eradicate poverty by making wealth and resources available to all. In this forward-thinking scenario, he foresees a universe where individuals engage in leisure, creativity, and personal interests instead of laboring for survival.
Though Musk’s forecasts may seem outlandish, they contribute to ongoing debates within technology and economic spheres regarding automation, universal income, and how AI might reshape society. Regardless of whether his vision unfolds in ten, fifteen, or twenty years, it undeniably provokes vital discussions about the changing nature of work and human-technology interaction.
