FBI Unveils New Footage of Brown University Shooting Suspect

FBI Unveils New Footage of Brown University Shooting Suspect

Post by : Meena Ariff

In the wake of the tragic shooting at Brown University, authorities in the U.S. have ramped up their search efforts. To aid in identifying the suspected shooter, the FBI has made available a new timeline featuring clearer video footage. This step follows the release of an individual previously considered a “person of interest”, who is now confirmed to have no links to the incident.

A reward of $50,000 has been announced by the FBI for any information that assists in the apprehension or identification of the suspect. Law enforcement agencies, both federal and local, are conducting thorough searches throughout Providence. Officers are examining homes, garages, alleys, and even dumpsters around the university premises as they seek clues.

The shooting occurred on Saturday afternoon within the engineering building at the university. Reports indicate that the assailant entered a classroom during testing hours and began firing a 9mm handgun indiscriminately, resulting in two fatalities and nine injuries. The shooter subsequently fled on foot, leading to a lockdown that spanned several hours across the campus.

Recent surveillance footage provided by the FBI features a stocky individual, around 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing dark attire. The suspect was captured walking around campus streets for nearly an hour post-2 PM Saturday. Unfortunately, the video obscures much of his face, complicating efforts for identification.

Investigators have so far received about 200 tips. Authorities are urging locals, business owners, and institutions to review their CCTV or personal camera footage from the day of the shooting, believing that further video evidence could be vital in pinpointing the suspect and tracking his movements.

While officials are holding back on assessing the shooter’s motives, they have ruled out speculation related to political, cultural, or ethnic issues, ensuring that all credible tips are being investigated.

This event has sparked significant discourse surrounding campus safety, with concerns raised about unlocked building doors during examination periods and gaps in surveillance coverage. In response, Brown University has enhanced security measures by increasing the number of safety personnel and limiting campus building access.

Brown University, established in 1764, stands as one of the U.S.'s oldest and most esteemed educational institutions, serving approximately 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The shooting, which resulted in two deaths and nine injuries, has left the campus community reeling as law enforcement continues its pursuit of the suspect.
