Scientists have achieved a groundbreaking milestone in understanding Parkinson’s disease by capturing the first-ever image of PINK1 protein on mitochondria. This discovery has opened a new chapter in the quest to decode the intricate mechanisms behind one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders. For decades, researchers have known that mutations in the PINK1 gene are associated with early-onset Parkinson’s, but the structural behavior of the PINK1 protein and its exact role remained elusive. Still, the unveiling of PINK1 on mitochondria represents a vital first step—a step that could redefine the future of neurological medicine.
