Yann LeCun, a prominent figure in the realm of artificial intelligence, has declared his departure from Meta after 12 influential years. The 65-year-old expert, instrumental in advancing Facebook's AI endeavors, will now concentrate on his independent startup, striving for "the next significant advancement in AI."
Leaving Meta signals the conclusion of a noteworthy chapter for the company, where he dedicated five years as the founding director of Facebook AI Research (FAIR) and seven years as chief AI scientist. Over the last decade, he has led initiatives that positioned Meta as a leader in foundational AI exploration.
In a comprehensive post on Facebook and LinkedIn, LeCun shared that his new venture will leverage the Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI) research program, a long-term initiative he has pursued with FAIR, NYU, and global partners. His aim is ambitious: developing AI systems that understand the physical environment, form lasting memories, reason through intricate scenarios, and plan complex actions.
Even as he leaves Meta, LeCun will keep connections with the organization. Meta will serve as a strategic ally for his new endeavor, allowing innovations from his lab to enrich the company’s ongoing AI strategies. This partnership offers LeCun the freedom to engage in long-term, foundational research while providing Meta insights from outside its corporate framework.
LeCun’s exit coincides with significant changes at Meta. Earlier this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg allocated $14.5 billion to Scale AI and appointed its leader, Alexandr Wang, as Meta’s new chief AI officer. This reorganization, together with the lukewarm reception to Meta's Llama 4 model, hints at a pivot toward faster commercialization and product-focused AI developments, contrasting with LeCun's research-centered perspective.
Now unbound by corporate limitations, LeCun will guide his startup according to his own vision, with the goal of reshaping AI's interaction with both the physical and cognitive realms. For Meta, this departure is critical, yet the continuing partnership guarantees the company retains insight from one of the most influential figures in AI today.
