Frank Benjamin, FJ Benjamin Founder, Passes Away at 90

Frank Benjamin, the visionary founder of Singapore-based fashion retail group FJ Benjamin, passed away on Wednesday, December 10, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, compassion, and entrepreneurship that shaped the fashion industry across Southeast Asia. The family described him in an obituary on Obits.sg as “a truly extraordinary man whose kindness, generosity and unwavering grace touched every life around him.” He was remembered as a pillar of strength, a mentor, and a leader who inspired countless people both within his family and across the wider community.

Founded in 1959 by Benjamin, FJ Benjamin became one of Asia’s leading fashion and lifestyle companies under his guidance. He served as CEO until 2006 and took on the role of executive chairman from 1999, before being redesignated as non-executive chairman in 2017. He stepped down from the board at the end of 2022 but continued to serve as emeritus chairman and adviser. His son, Douglas Benjamin, now leads the company as CEO, continuing the family legacy.

FJ Benjamin has grown into a major force in the region’s fashion and retail sector, with offices in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and other key territories. The group manages over 20 international brands, operating 144 stores and employing approximately 1,600 staff. Its portfolio spans luxury and lifestyle fashion, beauty, health products, and timepieces, distributing popular brands including Cole Haan, Guess, La Senza, Marc Jacobs, and Superdry. The group also handles well-known watch brands such as Guess, Casio, and Nautica, and was formerly a franchise partner for Manchester United stores in Singapore.

Benjamin’s entrepreneurial vision transformed FJ Benjamin into a household name across Southeast Asia, establishing a reputation for excellence, integrity, and innovation in the fashion industry. His contributions to business, mentorship, and community development have left an enduring mark, ensuring his legacy will inspire future generations of leaders and entrepreneurs in the region.
