Finance leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) advanced economies have agreed to conduct exercises to prepare for potential AI cyber attacks, Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said on October 15. The initiative aims to improve coordination and readiness as artificial intelligence creates new challenges for cybersecurity. Katayama said the proposal for tabletop exercises involving frontier AI had been discussed by G7 finance deputies and received ministerial approval. The announcement followed a meeting of G7 finance ministers and central bank governors held alongside the International Monetary Fund’s annual gathering in Bangkok, Thailand.
The move comes after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned that an AI-enabled cyber attack targeting a critical service at a financial institution could undermine public confidence. Such disruptions could affect trust in financial services and highlight the need for stronger preparation.
Tabletop exercises typically simulate crisis situations so officials can test decisions, communication and coordination without launching a real attack. The planned exercises could help G7 authorities examine how they would respond to advanced AI-related threats and protect financial system security. The initiative reflects growing international attention to AI cybersecurity risks, particularly where cyber incidents could disrupt essential financial services. However, officials have not announced a detailed schedule or specific scenarios for the exercises.
