Asian Investors Shift AI Strategy, Focus on Resilient and AI-Enabled Businesses

Asian Investors Shift AI Strategy, Focus on Resilient and AI-Enabled Businesses

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to dominate global financial markets, but leading Asian investors are becoming more selective about where they invest. Instead of chasing high-valued AI companies, many investment firms are focusing on businesses that either benefit from AI adoption or are less likely to be disrupted by the technology.

Speaking at a major investment conference in Singapore, executives from Temasek, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Primavera Capital Group, and Bain Capital Japan shared their evolving strategies for navigating the rapidly changing AI landscape.

While all agreed that AI represents one of the biggest investment opportunities of the decade, they also warned about soaring valuations, heavy infrastructure spending, and the growing risk of an investment bubble.

Investors Still Believe in AI, But With Greater Caution

Over the past two years, AI has driven stock markets to record highs, fueled by growing demand for AI chips, cloud computing, large language models, and data centers.

However, investors are beginning to question whether current market valuations accurately reflect future earnings.

Many fund managers believe AI will transform industries worldwide, but they are becoming increasingly cautious about investing in companies with extremely high valuations or uncertain business models.

Instead, investors are seeking businesses that generate stable cash flows while supporting the broader AI ecosystem.

Temasek Plans to Increase AI Investments

Singapore's state investment company Temasek remains optimistic about artificial intelligence but is broadening its investment approach.

Chief Investment Officer Rohit Sipahimalani said Temasek plans to increase its AI exposure significantly over the next five years.

Currently, around 6% of Temasek's portfolio is invested in AI-related businesses, but the company aims to increase that figure to 15%.

Temasek already owns stakes in major AI companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, but it is also investing in businesses with hard assets that are less vulnerable to AI disruption.

Sipahimalani explained that while AI presents enormous opportunities, it also threatens many traditional industries. Therefore, the company wants a balanced portfolio that captures AI growth while reducing long-term risks.

He emphasized that investors should evaluate the entire AI value chain rather than focusing only on headline technology companies.

Looking Beyond AI Giants

Rather than trying to predict which AI software company will become the next industry leader, many investors are targeting businesses that support AI development.

Stephanie Hui, Head of Private and Growth Equity for Asia-Pacific at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, said her team prefers investing in what she called the "picks-and-shovels" businesses of AI.

These include companies involved in:

  • Data centers

  • Liquid cooling technology

  • AI infrastructure

  • Computing facilities

  • Hardware support systems

According to Hui, these businesses are essential regardless of which AI applications ultimately dominate the market.

Instead of betting on future AI winners, Goldman Sachs is investing in companies that provide the infrastructure required for AI growth.

Concerns Over AI Bubble Continue to Grow

Several investment leaders warned that enthusiasm surrounding AI may be pushing market valuations too high.

Fred Hu, Chairman of Primavera Capital Group, said he strongly believes in AI's long-term potential but questioned whether investors are becoming overly optimistic.

He noted that enormous amounts of capital are flowing into AI-related businesses, raising concerns about whether future financial returns will justify current valuations.

His comments reflect growing worries across financial markets that parts of the AI sector could be entering bubble territory.

AI Infrastructure Must Deliver Real Results

Satoshi Ueyama of Bain Capital Japan also expressed confidence in AI but stressed that successful investment depends on practical adoption.

He said AI infrastructure investments only make economic sense if businesses and consumers actively use AI technologies.

According to Ueyama, Bain Capital is focusing on companies that successfully integrate AI into services and consumer applications rather than investing solely in hardware or early-stage technologies.

He added that while AI is unquestionably transforming industries, not every AI investment will succeed.

Why Investors Are Diversifying Their AI Portfolios

Many institutional investors are now spreading investments across different parts of the AI ecosystem to reduce risk.

Instead of concentrating only on AI software developers or semiconductor manufacturers, they are also investing in:

  • Renewable-powered data centers

  • Cloud infrastructure

  • Cooling systems

  • Enterprise software

  • AI-enabled service providers

  • Digital infrastructure

  • Industrial automation

This diversified strategy allows investors to benefit from AI growth while limiting exposure to companies whose valuations may already reflect overly optimistic expectations.

AI Remains the Biggest Long-Term Investment Theme

Despite increasing caution, none of the investors suggested they were abandoning AI.

Instead, they believe artificial intelligence will continue to reshape global industries over the coming decades.

The focus is now shifting from speculative investments toward businesses capable of generating sustainable profits as AI adoption expands across healthcare, manufacturing, finance, transportation, retail, and consumer services.

As AI moves from experimentation to widespread commercial use, investors increasingly prefer companies with proven business models, stable revenue streams, and technologies that support the broader AI ecosystem.
