Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and Ding Xuexiang jointly participated in a major ceremony marking the launch of the fourth stage of development of the Galkynysh gas field in Turkmenistan. The event took place in the Mary region and highlighted the growing strategic energy partnership between Turkmenistan and China.
The new phase involves the construction of facilities capable of producing an additional 10 billion cubic meters of commercial gas annually, along with the drilling of new production wells. This expansion is expected to significantly increase Turkmenistan’s gas output and strengthen its export capacity in the global energy market.
During the ceremony, Berdimuhamedow emphasized that Turkmenistan’s energy strategy focuses on both increasing exports and modernizing the fuel and energy sector. He noted that the country is actively adopting advanced technologies and diversifying energy routes to enhance its role as a reliable supplier in the Eurasian region.
The Galkynysh gas field, one of the largest in the world, plays a central role in the country’s long-term economic plans. Its continued development supports Turkmenistan’s transition from a raw material exporter to a producer of higher-value energy products, contributing to broader industrial growth.
China remains a key partner in this effort, with gas exports already flowing through multiple pipeline routes connecting the two countries. The expansion of the field and the planned development of additional pipeline routes are expected to further strengthen bilateral energy cooperation.
The project also reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility, with modern technologies being introduced to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency. Authorities highlighted ongoing efforts to integrate sustainable practices into large-scale energy projects.
Beyond energy production, the development of the Galkynysh field is contributing to regional growth by supporting infrastructure, housing, and employment in surrounding areas. The project is expected to create new job opportunities and improve living conditions for local communities.
The launch of this phase marks a significant milestone in Turkmenistan’s energy sector, reinforcing its position as a major global gas producer while deepening its economic and strategic ties with China.
