This week, the tent camps in Gaza transformed into rivers of mud as winter storm Byron swept through the beleaguered region, causing immense suffering for displaced Palestinians facing drenched shelters and plummeting temperatures. Families trapped in tents looked on in despair as relentless rain destroyed their meager possessions.

Children struggled through knee-high murky waters, their footwear swallowed by the muck. Dirt paths turned perilous with mudslides, while scattered refuse and raw sewage spilled over, mingling with the floodwaters. “We are submerged. I have no clothes left to wear, and we are without mattresses,” lamented Um Salman Abu Qenas, a resident in Khan Younis, as she recalled a night spent on sodden bedding.

Over in another part of the camp, Sabreen Qudeeh recounted waking to leaks drenching her family’s mattresses, while Ahmad Abu Taha remarked that no tent remained unharmed. “It’s extremely dire. There are elderly, displaced, and ill individuals in this camp,” he stated.

Worsening Aid Shortages Heighten Crisis

The storm has further exposed Gaza's vulnerable infrastructure, decimated by years of conflict. With nearly 2 million residents, many are displaced and reliant on tents or rubble for shelter, inadequate against the harsh elements. Local civil defense reports indicate that at least three partially damaged buildings in Gaza City collapsed under the rain, with over 2,500 emergency calls placed during the tempest.

Aid distribution, even during the current ceasefire, remains notably insufficient. While Israel states that it has permitted 260,000 tents, tankers, and more than 1,500 truckloads of blankets and warm clothing into Gaza, independent evaluations reveal that only a small fraction of the required 300,000 tents have been delivered. Many of these tents lack proper insulation, with essential equipment such as water pumps largely blocked, leaving residents to cope with significant flooding.

Families like Aliaa Bahtiti’s are compelled to wring out inches of water from their tent floors. Her son, just 8 years old, “was soaked through overnight, and by morning he was blue from sleeping on water,” she reported. Baraka Bhar, looking after her 3-month-old twins—one afflicted with hydrocephalus—added, “Our tents are tattered and allow rainwater to seep in. We cannot afford to lose our children this winter.”

An Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

The winter floods exacerbate an already critical humanitarian landscape in Gaza. Despite the ongoing efforts of international and local agencies to deliver aid, the response is grossly inadequate. Thousands of individuals remain exposed to cold, unsanitary conditions that significantly elevate the risk of illness and infection, highlighting the urgent need for adequate shelter, clothing, and medical assistance.
