H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan and H.H. Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan marked the opening ceremony of the Liwa International Festival 2026 in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra Region. The festival runs until 3 January 2026 and is notable as one of the region’s premier winter gatherings.
During their time at the festival, the leaders explored the event grounds and received thorough updates about the prominent sporting contests, cultural exhibits, and entertainment options included in this year's itinerary. Their visit included a stop at Liwa Village, recognized as the festival’s cultural and entertainment hub.
The opening showcased a stunning combination of sound, light, laser, and drone displays, culminating in a spectacular fireworks show over the desert. A highlight was the aerial performance by Al Fursan, the UAE’s national aerobatic team, which received enthusiastic applause from spectators.
The ceremony also saw the presence of several high-ranking officials and members of the ruling family, along with representatives from the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, who collaborated in organizing the festival.
Under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan and organized by DCT Abu Dhabi, the festival promises a diverse array of family-friendly entertainment, live concerts, and cultural exhibits. Highlights include motorsport events, dune challenges, drag races, freestyle performances, and traditional activities like falconry and sand wrestling.
New features at this year’s festival include the Extreme Mud Fest, drone shows, hot air balloon experiences, and weekend fireworks. A special concert and fireworks display will greet the New Year, alongside the commencement of the Moreeb Dune Car Championship.
With its blend of adventure, cultural experiences, music, and family enjoyment, the Liwa International Festival underscores Al Dhafra's growing status as a premium tourism destination, appealing to visitors from both the UAE and abroad.
