India Investigates Adani Defence Over Tax Evasion on Missile Parts

India’s tax authorities have launched an investigation into Adani Defence Systems and Technologies, a unit of the Adani Group, over allegations of evading import duties on missile components. This is the latest scrutiny of one of India’s largest business groups and raises questions about compliance in the country’s defence sector.

Background of Adani Defence

Adani Defence is a smaller part of Gautam Adani’s conglomerate, which spans coal, ports, airports, and energy. The defence unit produces equipment such as missiles, drones, and small arms, mainly for the Indian Armed Forces. It also imports components from countries including Russia and Israel to manufacture these defence products in India.

The Tax Investigation

According to government sources, India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) began looking into Adani Defence in March 2025. Authorities allege that the company misclassified imported missile parts to claim exemption from customs duties and taxes. The value of the imports under question is around 770 million rupees ($9 million).

The misclassification, if proven, would mean that the company avoided paying taxes legally due on these critical defence components. The DRI has reviewed documents and is reportedly seeking clarifications from Adani Defence about how it interpreted the customs rules.

Response from Adani Group

An Adani Group spokesperson said the company has submitted all clarifications and supporting documents to Indian authorities. “The issue stands closed from our end,” the spokesperson added, but did not confirm whether any payments were made to resolve the matter.

This statement suggests that the company maintains it has complied with customs regulations, even as the investigation continues.

This case is significant for several reasons:

Defence Sector Scrutiny: Defence imports and manufacturing are closely monitored because they involve sensitive national security materials. Any alleged tax evasion can raise concerns about accountability and transparency.
