IndiGo Ready to Resume Flights Between India and China

IndiGo Ready to Resume Flights Between India and China

Post by : Meena Ariff

IndiGo, one of India’s largest airlines, has announced that it is ready to resume flights between India and China once both countries finalize the necessary agreements. The airline’s Chief Executive Officer, Pieter Elbers, confirmed on Thursday that IndiGo had previously operated daily flights between the two nations before the Covid-19 pandemic and is now fully prepared to restart these services. The airline is closely watching diplomatic and commercial developments to ensure that its operations can resume safely and efficiently.

Elbers stated, “IndiGo operated daily flights between India and China before the pandemic. The airline is ready to resume services once agreements allow. Guided by its entrepreneurial spirit, IndiGo remains committed to exploring commercially viable opportunities.”

Flights Before the Pandemic

Before the Covid-19 outbreak, IndiGo had daily flights connecting Delhi with Chengdu and Bengaluru with Hong Kong. These flights were very popular among business travelers, tourists, and students. Many people traveling for work, education, or tourism relied on these connections to move easily between India and China. The airline had even planned to expand its network further within China, hoping to open more routes to meet the growing demand.

However, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly halted all international flights. Travel restrictions were imposed globally, and flights between India and China, along with other international destinations, were suspended. Air India, another major Indian airline, also had to stop its China flights during this time.

Political and Diplomatic Challenges

While the pandemic was the immediate reason for the suspension of flights, political tensions between India and China added another layer of complexity. In June 2020, Indian and Chinese troops clashed in the Galwan Valley, which became one of the most serious border confrontations in decades. This event significantly strained relations between the two countries, affecting not only diplomacy but also trade and travel.

Even after tensions eased slightly in October 2024, when both countries agreed on certain patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control, commercial flights did not resume immediately. The airlines had to wait for both stable diplomatic relations and formal agreements to ensure safe travel for passengers.

Importance for IndiGo

For IndiGo, restarting flights to China is more than just opening new routes. These flights connect important cities and represent valuable opportunities for business and tourism. The airline lost these connections abruptly five years ago due to the pandemic and political tensions. By restarting flights, IndiGo hopes to strengthen its international presence and provide convenient options for travelers who rely on these routes.

In recent years, IndiGo has been expanding its global network, adding new international destinations and increasing flight frequencies to popular cities. The resumption of flights to China will be another important step in re-establishing the airline as a major player in international aviation.

Benefits for Passengers

Passengers will greatly benefit from the resumption of these flights. Business travelers will have direct connections to key Chinese cities, making it easier to attend meetings and conferences. Tourists will find it convenient to travel to China without multiple layovers, and students studying abroad will have easier access to their educational institutions.

The most likely routes to resume first are Delhi to Chengdu and Bengaluru to Hong Kong. These routes were historically popular and have high demand, making them the priority for the airline.

Future Prospects and Opportunities

IndiGo’s readiness to restart China flights shows that the airline is actively seeking opportunities despite the challenges it faced in the past. Once the necessary bilateral agreements are finalized, travelers can expect the airline to operate daily flights connecting major Indian cities with important destinations in China.

Elbers emphasized that IndiGo is committed to exploring every commercially viable opportunity. The airline is monitoring the market demand and the political situation closely, ensuring that operations restart safely and efficiently. This approach demonstrates the airline’s focus on providing reliable and convenient travel options while maintaining its global growth strategy.

The resumption of flights between India and China will mark the end of a five-year break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and diplomatic tensions. It reflects improving ties between the two countries and provides travelers with better international travel options. For IndiGo, restarting these flights is not only about expanding its network but also about rebuilding connections that were lost during the challenging years.

The airline’s readiness demonstrates confidence in its international strategy and a commitment to connecting India with major global destinations. Travelers, businesses, and students alike are likely to benefit from this development, signaling a positive step toward smoother travel and stronger connections between India and China.
