A court in Malaysia has sentenced a 41-year-old man to nine months in prison after he pleaded guilty to an offence involving disrespect towards a religious text. The case was heard at a Magistrate’s Court in Alor Gajah.
The accused, Amir Abdul Malik, admitted to committing the act with intent to insult religious sentiments. Authorities stated that the offence was taken seriously due to its potential to affect public harmony in a multi-religious society.
Presiding magistrate Teoh Shu Yee observed that acts targeting any religion could have wider social consequences. The court emphasised the importance of maintaining mutual respect and upholding laws designed to protect religious sensitivities.
The case was prosecuted under relevant provisions of the Penal Code, which address actions intended to offend religious beliefs. The court ordered the jail term to take effect from the date of arrest.
Officials reiterated that strict enforcement of such laws is necessary to preserve social stability and prevent actions that could incite tension among communities.
