In a major relief for air travellers, the Centre has directed airlines to ensure that at least 60% of seats on every flight are offered without any seat selection fee. The move, announced by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, comes after widespread complaints from passengers over hidden charges and high fees for preferred seating.
Currently, airlines often charge extra for window seats, aisle seats and those with extra legroom, leaving only limited seats free of cost. The new directive aims to make air travel more transparent and affordable by reducing such additional expenses for passengers.
The regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has also instructed airlines to seat passengers travelling on the same PNR together, preferably in adjacent seats. This addresses a common issue faced by families and group travellers who are often separated unless they pay extra for seat selection.
Additionally, airlines have been asked to clearly display passenger rights related to delays, cancellations and denied boarding across websites, mobile apps and airport counters. The government has also directed carriers to adopt transparent policies for carrying items such as sports equipment, musical instruments and pets, ensuring better clarity and consistency.
With India now among the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, handling over 5 lakh passengers daily, the government has emphasised passenger convenience as a top priority. Initiatives like affordable airport food outlets and improved facilities further highlight efforts to enhance the overall travel experience.
