Google has unveiled its report titled “India’s Year in Search 2025”, which illustrates the subjects that captivated the nation. This overview covers searches spanning technology, major events, entertainment, sports, and culinary interests, shedding light on Indian digital behaviors. Interest in travel, culture, and AI notably surged this year.
Major national events significantly shaped search patterns. In the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, interest in “Operation Sindoor” and “live updates” increased dramatically, underscoring the public's focus on India’s military operations. The passing of celebrated actor Dharmendra on November 24 at age 89 triggered widespread tributes, marking him as the #10 Top Overall Search and the #2 News Event of 2025.
Sports maintained a robust presence in search patterns, particularly following India's historic victory at the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. Stars like Jemimah Rodrigues, Smriti Mandhana, and Shafali Verma emerged as top female personalities, while young cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi was the #1 trending personality.
In the realm of entertainment, the romantic blockbuster Saiyaara, featuring Aneet Padda and Ahaan Panday, claimed the title of the year’s #1 trending movie, with its theme song garnering the highest searches. South Indian cinema also drew attention, with titles like Kantara, Coolie, Marco, and Game Changer capturing viewer interest.
The report further indicates a rising fascination with AI and technology. Google Gemini emerged as the #2 Top Overall Search, alongside increasing search queries for “Gemini saree trend,” “3D model trend,” and AI innovations such as Grok. Notably, the question “What is ceasefire?” led the “Meaning” category, reflecting public concern for contemporary issues.
Cultural and culinary curiosity also found prominence in searches. Interest in traditional dishes like Thekua and Ukadiche Modak highlighted the appeal of Indian gastronomy, while “Yorkshire Pudding” indicated diverse global culinary influences. The collectible toy Labubu became a viral sensation, with many children searching for “What is a Labubu?”.
Environmental consciousness came to the forefront after an incident on Nikhil Kamath’s podcast highlighted air quality concerns. Searches for “Air Quality near me” and “Near Me” saw significant spikes, alongside queries about “Earthquake near me” and “Floodlighting.” Other prominent searches included “Maha Kumbh” as the top news event and “What is Waqf Bill” as the leading “What Is” query.
Google’s findings underscore an engaged populace keen on news, entertainment, sports, AI, culture, and social concerns, utilizing search for staying updated on both local and global issues.
