In a hospital setting following a routine hernia surgery, Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has expressed his support for his son Flavio Bolsonaro’s ambitions to run for the presidency in 2026.
The procedure reportedly went well, and doctors indicate that Bolsonaro will need five to seven days for a full recovery.
After receiving permission from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, Bolsonaro was granted temporary release from prison for the medical procedure. Currently serving a 27-year sentence related to coup planning from the 2022 elections, he is under close police watch during his hospital stay, with restrictions on electronic devices.
In a letter presented by Flavio Bolsonaro outside the Brasilia hospital, the former president declared his son a pre-candidate for the upcoming election, emphasizing the need to uphold the people's wishes and to safeguard his political ideals.
Flavio Bolsonaro, 44, a senator, aims to advance his father’s conservative principles and is set to contend against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva during the election slated for October 4, 2026.
Jair Bolsonaro’s health has been a concern over the years, having endured a knife attack in 2018 and multiple subsequent surgeries. He may also receive treatment for persistent hiccups during this hospital stay, subject to his condition.
Following a court ruling, Bolsonaro was incarcerated at the end of November and began serving his sentence thereafter. Despite his confinement, his influence remains potent among his supporters.
The acknowledgment of Bolsonaro's backing for his son caught financial markets off-guard, leading to an unexpected appreciation in Brazil's currency against the U.S. dollar.
This development places Flavio Bolsonaro at the forefront of Brazil’s political landscape as the nation gears up for the 2026 election, and underscores Jair Bolsonaro's enduring impact on politics, even amid his legal and medical troubles.
