BJP Member of Parliament and actress Kangana Ranaut has voiced her discontent after AI technology was employed to modify her photographs from Parliament. The digitally altered images depicted her in formal suits, contrasting sharply with her usual saree attire for official events. Kangana condemned these modifications as an invasion of her personal freedom.
The uproar started when AI-generated pictures of Kangana began circulating on social media, showcasing her leaving Parliament in blue, brown, and rust-hued suits. However, the original images featured her in traditional sarees, a staple of her wardrobe since her election as a Lok Sabha MP representing Mandi in June 2024.
Kangana took to Instagram Stories to respond, urging people to cease altering her likeness through AI technology. She highlighted that these images were taken while she was adorned in sarees, accusing users of exploiting technology to distort her appearance without her permission.
In a pointed statement, Kangana reflected on her frustration, stating that she frequently wakes up to find AI-edited images of herself in various outfits and makeup. She labelled this practice as unsettling and unacceptable, asserting that the choice of how one presents themselves is deeply personal and shouldn't be manipulated.
“This is violating beyond words,” she remarked, emphasizing that individuals must refrain from “dressing up others” through AI alterations. Kangana highlighted that her presentation, especially in a respected setting like Parliament, is solely her prerogative.
This incident has amplified conversations around the misuse of AI on social platforms. As AI tools become ever more powerful, concerns about consent, privacy, and ethical standards are escalating. Public figures, particularly women, often find themselves as easy targets for such modifications.
Kangana Ranaut has consistently been an outspoken advocate on various issues, spanning film, politics, and social causes. Her reaction underscores a broader apprehension regarding the reckless use of AI technology without accountability for personal integrity.
Beyond her political activities, Kangana boasts a celebrated acting career, making her debut in 2006 with Gangster, and has since delivered notable performances in films like Queen, Fashion, Tanu Weds Manu, and Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. She has garnered multiple National Film Awards and was honored with the Padma Shri for her contributions to Indian cinema.
Recently, she ventured into filmmaking and appeared in Emergency, where she portrayed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, released in January this year. Moreover, Kangana is anticipated to make her Hollywood debut in the horror drama Blessed Be the Evil, with production expected to commence in New York this summer.
As discussions surrounding AI, consent, and digital rights continue, Kangana Ranaut’s forthright stance acts as a crucial reminder that technological advancements should not compromise personal dignity and autonomy.
