Sherwood Leads Canucks to Overtime Win Against Oilers

Sherwood Leads Canucks to Overtime Win Against Oilers

Post by : Maya Rahman

The Vancouver Canucks claimed a thrilling 4–3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in overtime on Sunday at Rogers Arena, thanks to Kiefer Sherwood’s decisive goal. The forward tipped in Brock Boeser’s wrist shot just 1:43 into overtime, sealing the win in front of an energetic home crowd. The match, which featured three forwards and no defensemen for Vancouver in overtime, marked the team’s second extra-time win this season.

Sherwood was the hero of the night, scoring twice to secure the Canucks’ victory. His game-winning goal showcased teamwork and confidence, something Vancouver had been missing during its previous three-game losing streak. “We practice those details during camp,” Sherwood said after the match. “Last year we lost too many overtime games. It feels great to make it work now.”

Brock Boeser continued his strong form by scoring once and assisting twice, while Elias Pettersson netted a power-play goal early in the second period. Conor Garland contributed two assists, further strengthening the Canucks’ attack. Vancouver showed determination despite the absence of top defenseman Quinn Hughes, who missed the game due to a lower-body injury.

Edmonton trailed 3–1 entering the third period but managed to fight back to level the game at 3–3. Leon Draisaitl, playing his 800th NHL game, scored twice, including the equaliser on a power play with just over five minutes left. Jack Roslovic also scored and assisted, showing promise after signing with the Oilers earlier this month. Despite their comeback, Edmonton fell short in overtime.

Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch praised his players’ fightback but admitted the team must improve early-game execution. “It’s tough to come back when you’re down by two,” he said. “We showed resilience, but we shouldn’t be putting ourselves in that position.” Canucks coach Adam Foote, meanwhile, applauded his team’s ability to stay composed under pressure. “Without Quinn, it was a challenge, but the group responded well,” he said.

Leon Draisaitl’s two goals highlighted his consistency as one of the NHL’s top performers. The German star has now recorded at least one point in 26 of his last 27 games against Vancouver. Despite the loss, he remained a key figure in Edmonton’s offensive play.

The Canucks opened the scoring when Boeser converted a pass from Evander Kane in the first period. Pettersson doubled the lead with a one-timer in the second, before Edmonton responded through Draisaitl’s breakaway finish. Sherwood’s first goal made it 3–1 late in the second, but Edmonton clawed back with goals from Roslovic and Draisaitl to push the game into overtime.

The victory ended Vancouver’s three-game losing streak and improved their record to 5–5–0. The team’s improved composure and offensive coordination were evident, especially in clutch moments. “We just kept working,” Sherwood said. “Everyone stayed calm and trusted the plan.”

Defenceman Victor Mancini left the game in the second period with an undisclosed injury and did not return. Coach Foote said Mancini was being evaluated. The Canucks’ next challenge will be maintaining this momentum as they continue their campaign.

In a night full of intensity and endurance, the Vancouver Canucks rediscovered their rhythm through teamwork and determination. Kiefer Sherwood’s overtime heroics not only sealed the win but also signalled renewed confidence for a team looking to rebuild its winning form. The Oilers, despite a commendable comeback, will look to refine their defensive play as they move forward in the season.
