North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised the launch of long-range strategic cruise missiles on Sunday, highlighting the country’s advancing nuclear capabilities and its preparedness to counter security threats. This missile test reflects North Korea’s ongoing efforts to bolster its military strength ahead of the significant ruling party congress expected in early 2026.
Kim expressed strong approval as the cruise missiles successfully followed their flight path over the sea west of the Korean Peninsula and struck their intended targets. He stressed that conducting regular checks on the reliability and quick response of North Korea’s nuclear deterrent is a responsible measure, especially given the increasing security challenges the nation faces.
South Korea’s military confirmed the launch of multiple cruise missiles from the Sunan area near Pyongyang at approximately 8 a.m. on Sunday. Officials described North Korea’s recent military actions—including the construction of a nuclear-powered submarine and the testing of long-range surface-to-air missiles—as provocations that undermine peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
Analysts believe that this missile test likely involved upgraded cruise missile technology, which can deliver both conventional and nuclear warheads. There are indications that North Korea may carry out additional missile tests around the New Year, signaling a period of intensified military activity.
In addition to the missile launch, Kim also attended the opening ceremony of a paper mill on Sunday. Over the past month, he has been involved in inaugurating various facilities such as factories and hotels, as North Korea intensifies efforts to complete its current five-year economic development plan ahead of the Ninth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
These recent developments highlight North Korea’s dual approach of strengthening its military capabilities while pursuing economic progress, all amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.
