Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the government is preparing amendments to the Land (Group Settlement Areas) Act 1960. The proposed changes would allow more than one house to be built on a single residential lot owned by Felda settlers.
Anwar said he has instructed the Federal Land Development Authority to prepare draft amendments within two months. The proposal will be submitted to the Cabinet before being tabled in Parliament later this year for consideration.

The prime minister said around 8,000 houses have already been built and occupied on Felda residential lots. While legal amendments are being completed, the government will immediately approve water and electricity connections for these homes to improve living conditions.
According to Anwar, state governments will be responsible for providing water supply, while Tenaga Nasional Berhad has been directed to speed up electricity connections for all eligible houses across Felda settlements.
The Felda New Generation Housing Project currently covers 43 locations with a total of 8,224 housing units across seven Malaysian states. The programme was introduced to provide better housing opportunities for younger generations of Felda families.
The proposed legal amendment is expected to help growing families remain within Felda communities while improving housing availability. The government says the initiative reflects its commitment to supporting rural development and modernising settlement policies.
