Renewables Beat Global Power Demand in 2025

Renewables Beat Global Power Demand in 2025

Post by : Shakul

Renewable energy sources surpassed global electricity demand growth in 2025, marking a major milestone in the global energy transition. According to a report by Ember, clean energy generation grew faster than overall electricity demand for the first time in modern history.

The report revealed that renewable power generation increased by 887 terawatt hours, exceeding the global electricity demand growth of 849 terawatt hours. This growth was largely driven by rapid expansion in solar energy, especially in countries like China and India.

Renewables, including solar, wind, and hydropower, accounted for over one-third of global electricity generation, reaching a record 33.8%. At the same time, coal’s share dropped below one-third, signaling a gradual decline in fossil fuel dependence.

Solar energy played a key role in this shift, growing by 30% in 2025 and meeting nearly three-quarters of the increase in electricity demand. When combined with wind power, clean energy sources met almost all of the additional demand during the year.

China led global solar expansion, contributing more than half of the world’s growth in solar capacity. India also recorded significant gains in both solar and wind energy, alongside improvements in hydropower output.

The report also highlighted advancements in battery storage, which increased by 46% as costs dropped significantly. This development allows solar energy to be used beyond daylight hours, improving efficiency and reliability.

Experts say the trend shows that renewable energy can now meet rising global demand while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. However, they stress that continued investment and policy support are needed to sustain this momentum and further cut carbon emissions.
