Air pollution remains a concern across several parts of Peninsular Malaysia, with multiple locations in the central and southern regions recording unhealthy air quality during the latest morning monitoring. The persistent Malaysia haze has affected communities for weeks, raising concerns about outdoor activities, public health and the impact of pollution on daily life. At 9am, Johan Setia in Selangor recorded an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 172, the highest among the locations listed in the latest report. Several other monitoring stations across the Klang Valley, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor also recorded readings above 150, placing them in the unhealthy category. The situation comes as Malaysia enters its third month of haze linked to fires across the region. Although officials previously expected conditions to improve as wind patterns changed, the latest readings indicate that polluted air continues to affect numerous locations. The duration and intensity of the haze may vary from one area to another, depending on weather conditions, wind direction and the concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere.
Johan Setia, located in Selangor within the Klang Valley region, recorded an API reading of 172 at 9am. The reading placed the area among the locations experiencing unhealthy air quality in the latest update. Other parts of the Klang Valley also reported elevated pollution levels. Batu Muda in Kuala Lumpur recorded 162, followed by Petaling Jaya at 160 and Klang at 158. Banting registered 156, while Cheras and Putrajaya each recorded 155. Shah Alam reported an API reading of 154. These figures show that the haze is not limited to a single neighbourhood. Several communities across the wider metropolitan area are experiencing similar conditions, although the exact pollution level differs between monitoring stations. For residents, local readings are particularly important because air quality can change over relatively short distances. Conditions in one part of the Klang Valley may be different from those in another, making location-specific monitoring useful when planning outdoor activities.
The haze has also affected Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, where several monitoring locations recorded unhealthy readings. In Negeri Sembilan, Nilai recorded an API of 168, while Seremban registered 164 and Port Dickson recorded 153. The readings indicate that pollution remained elevated across multiple locations in the state during the morning assessment. In Melaka, Bukit Rambai recorded 168, Alor Gajah registered 165 and Bandaraya Melaka reported 164. The spread of elevated readings across these areas suggests that the pollution problem extends beyond Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. People travelling between states may therefore encounter different levels of haze during the same journey. Authorities and residents will need to continue monitoring local conditions as weather patterns change and the regional haze situation develops.
Johor was another state affected by the haze, with several monitoring stations reporting unhealthy air quality. Tangkak recorded an API reading of 164, while Pasir Gudang registered 162. Batu Pahat reported 158, followed by Kota Tinggi at 157. Kluang and Larkin each recorded 153, while Pengerang registered 132. Although Pengerang's reading was lower than those recorded at several other locations in Johor, it remained within the unhealthy category. The variation between monitoring stations highlights the importance of checking current readings rather than assuming that air quality is the same throughout a state. Wind conditions and the movement of polluted air can influence the readings recorded at different locations.
Elevated pollution levels were also recorded outside the central and southern peninsula. In Pahang, Rompin registered an API reading of 158, while Indera Mahkota in Kuantan recorded 149. Seri Manjung in Perak reported a reading of 115, which also falls within the unhealthy category. In Sarawak, the monitoring station at IPD Serian recorded 153, while Kuching registered 152. Samarahan reported a lower reading of 128. At the same time, the situation was not equally severe across the country. The latest report said 38 locations recorded moderate air quality, while Balik Pulau in Penang, Tanah Merah in Kelantan and Limbang in Sarawak recorded good air quality.
The Air Pollutant Index is used in Malaysia to communicate the level of air pollution recorded at monitoring stations. A higher reading indicates poorer air quality and can signal a greater need for precautions, particularly among people sensitive to pollution.
Malaysia's reported API categories are:
0 to 50: Good
51 to 100: Moderate
101 to 200: Unhealthy
201 to 300: Very unhealthy
301 and above: Hazardous
Under this classification, Johan Setia's reading of 172 falls within the unhealthy category. It does not fall into the very unhealthy or hazardous ranges. When air quality is unhealthy, people may experience irritation of the eyes, nose or throat, coughing, or breathing discomfort. The effects can vary depending on the individual, the duration of exposure and the concentration of pollutants. Children, older adults and people with asthma or other respiratory and heart conditions may be particularly sensitive to polluted air. Residents should pay attention to local advisories and seek medical assistance if they experience serious or worsening symptoms.

During periods of unhealthy air quality, reducing exposure to polluted outdoor air is an important precaution. Residents can consider limiting strenuous outdoor exercise, especially when local API readings are high. People who need to spend time outside may consider using a well-fitting particulate respirator, such as an N95, where appropriate. Ordinary cloth masks may provide limited protection against fine airborne particles. Keeping windows and doors closed when outdoor air is heavily polluted, where practical, may help reduce the amount of haze entering indoor spaces. An appropriately sized air purifier with a high-efficiency particle filter may also help improve indoor air quality. People with existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions should follow advice from their healthcare professionals and monitor symptoms closely. Anyone experiencing significant difficulty breathing or chest pain should seek urgent medical care.
Malaysia has been affected by regional pollution linked to Indonesia forest fires since August 8, according to the report. Smoke from fires can travel across national borders under certain wind conditions, contributing to the phenomenon known as transboundary haze. The pollution has become a recurring regional challenge because smoke does not remain confined to the country where a fire starts. Weather systems, wind direction and atmospheric conditions can carry smoke over long distances, affecting air quality in neighbouring countries. On October 13, Deputy Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh said the haze was expected to gradually ease over the following two weeks as wind patterns changed.
