Singapore experienced a rise in PM2.5 pollution on October 17, 2026, as air quality readings entered the high range in three regions despite an overall improvement from the previous day's peak. The situation has raised concerns about the health effects of haze and the possibility of further pollution spreading across the region. At noon, the one-hour PM2.5 reading reached 206 micrograms per cubic metre in western Singapore, 174 in the central region and 165 in the south. These readings fall within the high band of 151 to 250 micrograms per cubic metre. The 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) ranged between 136 and 184 at noon. This was an improvement from Friday, when the PSI reached 229, its highest level recorded in Singapore so far this year.
Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) warned that the risk of severe transboundary haze remains. Dry weather is expected to continue in parts of the southern ASEAN region, potentially allowing fires and smoke pollution to persist. Scattered fire hotspots were detected in Kalimantan and southern Sumatra. Moderate to dense smoke haze was also observed across parts of Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Kalimantan, Sumatra and western Sarawak. Thick smoke and cloud cover made it difficult to determine the full extent of the hotspots.

The Ministry of Health advised residents to use hourly PM2.5 readings when deciding on precautions for immediate outdoor activities. Older adults, pregnant women and people with chronic heart or lung conditions should avoid outdoor activities when readings enter the high band. People who must go outside may use a well-fitting N95 mask to reduce exposure to fine particles. KN95, FFP2 and KF94 masks are also effective alternatives. Healthy individuals should minimise outdoor activities when PM2.5 readings reach 251 or above.
Unpredictable air quality conditions have disrupted several activities. Some outdoor events were cancelled or postponed, while the Great Eastern Women's Run scheduled for November 1 was cancelled. The Purple Parade was postponed to the first half of 2027.
