In a thrilling Copa del Rey encounter on Wednesday, Kylian Mbappe once again proved to be Real Madrid's hero as they edged out third-division Talavera 3-2.
The French forward netted the opener from the penalty spot in the 41st minute, later sealing the match with a spectacular long-range effort, which marked his tenth goal in just six outings for Madrid. Mbappe also played a part in Talavera's own goal by Manuel Farrando during stoppage time of the first half.
Coach Xabi Alonso lauded his forward's impact: “He was instrumental. Kylian has that unique ability to score. His third goal was crucial, which is why we kept him on the pitch and put him in the starting lineup.”
Though Madrid controlled much of the game, Talavera made a late push. Nahuel Arroyo found the net in the 80th minute, followed by a stoppage-time goal from Gonzalo Di Renzo, bringing the scoreline uncomfortably close. A key save from goalkeeper Andriy Lunin in the dying moments helped secure the win for Madrid.
Despite several regular starters missing, Madrid dominated in the first half yet failed to convert more chances to seal the game earlier. Alonso remarked, “We managed the first half well and took the lead, but not scoring a third goal kept it exciting. The second half was intense. We've achieved our objective, and now we look forward to the next match.”
With this victory, Madrid avoids a Copa del Rey upset and concludes the year on a high note as they prepare to face Sevilla in the upcoming Spanish league match. Mbappe's ongoing brilliance remains essential for Madrid as they seek to regain their rhythm following some recent challenges.
