7.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Alaska-Yukon Border, Minimal Impact Reported

Post by : Meena Ariff

A magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck the secluded region of the Alaska–Yukon border on Saturday, shaking nearby small communities without causing injuries or considerable damage. Authorities confirmed that no tsunami alert was raised.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake hit approximately 230 miles (370 km) northwest of Juneau, Alaska, and about 155 miles (250 km) west of Whitehorse, Yukon, at a shallow depth of around 6 miles (10 km), intensifying the tremors felt.

In Whitehorse, residents quickly notified local authorities, with police receiving two emergency calls. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Calista MacLeod reported an active conversation among locals on social media regarding the quake.

Seismologist Alison Bird, representing Natural Resources Canada, highlighted that the region consists primarily of mountainous terrain with a sparse population. Most reports indicated only minor disturbances, such as items falling from shelves, with no evidence of structural damage.

The nearest Yukon community, Haines Junction, resides roughly 80 miles (130 km) from the epicenter and has just over 1,000 residents. Yakutat, Alaska, with a population of 662, is located approximately 56 miles (91 km) from the quake’s epicenter. The event was followed by several smaller aftershocks.
